Seattle Running Club » 2016 SRCBrooks Team

The 2016 #SRCBrooks “Li’l Beasts” aspire for the same things their big siblings on the Brooks Beasts Track Club aspire towards: dreaming large, running big, and giving back to the running community!

The #SRCBrooks team is an annually-updated cross-section of running disciplines and talents. They receive support from our club as well as Brooks Running, and in return they give back in the form of volunteer work on local trails and at many local races. The team members are chosen on the strength of their running résumé as well as their commitment to our club and to supporting the growth of running in our region. These runners can be found on a track, on a road, on trails, and everywhere in between. Meet them below!

LIFETIME RUNNING GOAL

Staying injury-free. Achieving that, sub-4 hours at Chuckanut, a marathon PR at Boston, and completing my first 100 miler.

SECRET TALENT

I can remove all of the blood from my fingers

GUILTIEST VICE(S)

2 Fast 2 Furious; my own jokes

RUNNER PET PEEVE(S)

That getting stronger/faster doesn’t make it hurt less. And nipple chafing. And that it can be absolutely miserable.

CAKE OR PIE

Cake.

WHY DO YOU RUN (or, alternately, WHAT ARE YOU RUNNING FROM)

Everything else is too hard and/or requires upper body strength.

LIFETIME RUNNING GOAL

UTMB! Someday!

SECRET TALENT

Being way too literal; oops, that’s no secret. And it doesn’t require any talent. :(

GUILTIEST VICE(S)

If only I had the guilt…!

RUNNER PET PEEVE(S)

When I complain about being injured. I would hate to be around myself when I’m injured.

CAKE OR PIE

Sure.

WHY DO YOU RUN (or, alternately, WHAT ARE YOU RUNNING FROM)

I’m definitely running away from something. But after many years and dollars I have not figured it out. Luckily I’ve been enjoying it so far.

2016 RUNNING GOAL

I still want to break 5 in the mile. However, in transitioning to trails and longer road races, I would like to pull an Evan Williams and pull PRs out of my bum for months. That guy’s a beast! In all seriousness though, I want to focus on mental training and self-talk and eliminate the number of times “I could stop right now” pops into my head. I think that will stimulate my training, and in turn, my racing. I have never raced anything longer than a 5-mile (GASP!), so this will be a great year!

SECRET TALENT

Sometimes when I have a few too many saisons, I have been known to adopt a convincing Irish accent. Well, convincing to me.

GUILTIEST VICE(S)

Bad dance movies, Double Stuf Oreos (all other kinds are not worth the time or calories), TJ Maxx & Target…I cannot NOT buy something every time I go.

RUNNER PET PEEVE(S)

The clodhopper footfall. That or “the look-back” during races.

CAKE OR PIE

Both. Apple ginger pear pie from Al a Mode Pies in Phinney Ridge or Carrot Cake

WHY DO YOU RUN (or, alternately, WHAT ARE YOU RUNNING FROM)

I run because it is when I feel most alive. Consequently, I feel most dead after a nasty VO2Max workout. Nothing beats finding your rhythm on a long run or crushing hill repeats with SRC friends. I love the internal motivation it requires, the constant desire to improve. I run to be part of a community. I run to maintain this bod. I am constantly running from my inner fat kid who loves snacking on Double Stufs and cereal from the end of dinner until bedtime. There’s also that running-related tattoo I have…which pretty much locks me into running for the rest of my life and I don’t mind!

2016 RUNNING GOAL

1. Race at least 25 times. I love the competition and the post-race parties.
2. Win the Northwest Trail Runs Half Marathon Series.
3. Set a marathon PR at Boston this year.
4. Run the Wonderland Trail.
5. Wear more costumes. I have an annual tradition of dressing as Santa from Thanksgiving to Christmas. I’d like to add Easter bunny, turkey, and leprechaun costumes to the running wardrobe this year.

SECRET TALENT

PUNS. I work in Accounting, but I have renamed our team the Department of Corrections. May I interest you in investing in my grammar and editing start-up? I want to call it Colon Cleanse. How did the eagle get better at catching salmon? It realized it had secret talons.

GUILTIEST VICE(S)

Binge-watching Netflix while eating chips. I have spent too many nights in a crumb-covered stupor singing, “Bed or one more? Bed or one more?”

RUNNER PET PEEVE(S)

Serious runners. Runners are beautiful people, so it’s disappointing when my smiles and eye contact are not reciprocated out on the roads and trails. We should all be outside running happy. As the Joker says, “Why so serious?”

CAKE OR PIE

Vegan cupcakes!

WHY DO YOU RUN (or, alternately, WHAT ARE YOU RUNNING FROM)

I run to feel light, easy, and free. Running unlocks the door to my true self. When I run, I become the lightest version of myself. Running releases my creativity. When I run, I move through the world with an ease and liberty that I cannot replicate in any other aspect of my life. Also, I run towards the beer and pizza at the finish line.

2016 RUNNING GOALS

Complete a 100 Miler. Run a lot of trails. Connect with the community. Don’t get in too much trouble with my wife for running too much while preparing for the arrival of our fourth child and adjusting to having a new one in the home.

SECRET TALENT

Texas BBQ Pitmaster

GUILTIEST VICE(S)

Top two power songs on my run playlist are from Katy Perry.

RUNNER PET PEEVE(S)

People who actually are smart enough to run a negative split that blow by me in the 2nd half looking like they are not suffering at all.

CAKE OR PIE

Cake with frosting and sprinkles bathed in whole milk.

WHY DO YOU RUN (or, alternately, WHAT ARE YOU RUNNING FROM)

This question needs a 5000 word blog post. I run because it’s the only time I feel completely present in the moment. I run to get faster and become better against a perfectly impartial judge – the clock. I run to test myself against competition. I run to stay healthy. I run because it’s my favorite way to learn new things about the world and myself. I run to see the next new place, to take on the next challenge. I run to test my limit and to discover I can do more than I ever thought I could. I run because it fills an empty place inside of me for a while and when it becomes empty again I run some more.

2016 AND LIFETIME RUNNING GOAL

This year: to not feel like I want to die during my first 100 mile race this year! And to run the entire John Wayne Trail across WA! Lifetime: it’s endless as to what might happen!

SECRET TALENT

A koala bear in the wild let me pet it while I was out backpacking – I guess you could say I’m a “koala whisperer”.

GUILTIEST VICE(S)

Qdoba queso and chips – I eat them all in one sitting – actually, that’s more of a craving than a vice. Let’s see, vices…oh wait…RUNNING! It helps me cope with life in general.

RUNNER PET PEEVE(S)

I actually don’t think I have many since I tend to be at peace with the world when I’m out running on trails (you’ll rarely see me on roads)…maybe the only real pet peeve is on the occasion that someone has music playing that can be heard by everyone around them. I actually saw a reputable running shop selling these speakers you wear on the wrist…annoying times 1000 they’d be!

CAKE OR PIE

Chocolate cake very sugary white frosting (NOT the whipped cream or cream cheese style). I like my mother’s pies too. And I like chicken pot pies too.

WHY DO YOU RUN (or, alternately, WHAT ARE YOU RUNNING FROM)

Well, I’m happy to say I have yet to run from the law. Running enables me to see lots of cool stuff in the woods (and desert) in a quicker time period than I did when I was just hiking on trails.

2016 RUNNING GOALS

1) Stay healthy & injury free.
2) Marathon under 2:50:00.
3) Train and run well at White river 50 mile – I did not know how did I do it in 2014 but here is the story behind: I spent the first 13 miles constantly trying to locate a bathroom in the woods, dealing with foot injuries, and overcoming year-round Indiana flat running. Although, I somehow managed 5th place female finisher but I basically spent the next 3 days in a wheelchair, and of course the foot injury got worse.

SECRET TALENT

My Chinese is pretty good.

GUILTIEST VICE(S)

Spend too much money on fitness (racing fees, gym pass, bikes, running shoes/gear). I think with Brooks’ support, it will help me reduce that expense by a bit.

RUNNER PET PEEVE(S)

Self-centered/careless drivers & cyclists.

CAKE OR PIE

I like napoleon or chocolate cake.

2016: Run a second half marathon, with a PR; Try as many different types of races and distances as I can; Figure out how to balance running with lifting, crosstraining, and injury prevention work within the limits of my current training schedule.

LIFETIME RUNNING GOAL

I have one main goal for the year which is a big deal for me, but I’m not ready to share it with the world quite yet. With my mom passing away recently, I haven’t focused on setting up a race schedule for the year yet. I’m looking forward to doing that soon and will update.

SECRET TALENT

This isn’t really a talent, but I have an extremely high tolerance for pain. There have been a few different doctors who work with high level athletes who have told me I was able to tolerate more pain than anyone they had ever worked with. Unfortunately I don’t think it helps me with my running, but if I’m ever tortured for information, you can be sure your secrets are safe with me!

GUILTIEST VICE(S)

I used to have a huge sweet tooth. Now I have a sweet brain, but my mouth isn’t too interested. When I go to Germany, I buy a ton of chocolate, then bring it home and rarely eat it.

RUNNER PET PEEVE(S)

When people run one or two steps in front of you (or behind you) rather than with you. You’re running the same pace! Unless you’re on a single track trail, run next to one another. Isn’t that why you chose to run with another person?

CAKE OR PIE

Cake! With very little frosting.

WHY DO YOU RUN (or, alternately, WHAT ARE YOU RUNNING FROM)

I run to see how much I can push myself and what I’m capable of achieving. I wasn’t athletic growing up and now I’m most often associated with being an athlete. It’s been an interesting change in my life. Even though I’ve now been an athlete longer than I wasn’t one, I’m still trying to prove I deserve the title of “athlete.”
